The Fruit on that Branch - An award winning blog post

The Fruit on that Branch...

“I will become a doctor!”

“I will become a pilot!”

We all dream about becoming great people through the great professions that we dream about. We all are very enthusiastic about all these things when we are kids but as we grow, we understand the reality. It doesn’t take just words to pursue our dream but it takes time, finances, will power, our mind, body and soul, in one word – higher education.

According to Wikipedia, “Higher education is tertiary education leading to the award of an academic degree.”. In layman’s language, it is “when a person starts going to college or university”.

I feel that higher education is like the most important step in the ladder of education and the most crucial step in preparing the future generation of a country. Definitions aside, let’s come to the main concern- “Why higher education?” I have myself seen various people who completed only their school and now are sitting at homes to do nothing. Why did you go to school then? Therefore, higher education is a compulsory step in pursuing anything.

In India, in a country of 135 crore people, for some, ‘education’ is just like a fruit which is hung far away on the top branch of a tree which only those can get who live on the high floors of the tall skyscrapers. Then comes the fire brigade of Government seats and reservation to help these students on the ground floor to grab the fruit. Now, few of them are not able to grab even that opportunity so they plan to travel to a different tree for the same fruit. They go abroad. So as a whole everybody in this scenario is racing, is competing to grab that fruit of higher education and in turn, success.

After visiting Germany and seeing the processes there, I felt - “Sargun, why this doesn’t happen in India too?!” They have a system full of care and free of corruption. Free medical care for the aged and free and quality higher education to any student (Yes! Any student even a foreigner) who can speak German fluently. What a good scheme to promote and save national language as well as education. I know! I know! That is not possible in India, keeping in mind the swarming number of students here.

As a child, I used to wonder why everybody is flying abroad after school. Why everybody is studying in India, gaining knowledge from here and then working in other foreign countries and giving the fruit there. Then I came to know about the concept of brain drain. This is so ridiculous. When we ourselves don’t want to improve or develop our nation then why do we curse the government for not fulfilling our demands? Ok, now that completely is a personal opinion but how would you feel if you educate and prepare a child with all that you have but when she or he becomes successful, they leave you and provide their services to some other person.

Movies like 3 Idiots and Super 30 tell us the reality. It is not easy to understand this world and how it works. It kicks out the poor, deprived and truly talented and lifts up the rich and fraud. We can change it if we change ourselves. Yes, higher education is costly but there are government seats and scholarships to the rescue for the truly deserving. Yes, the education system is sometimes thought to be a bane (as it divides us into castes of grades and marks) but the New Education Policy 2020 will take care of that. Yes, there might be no institution of your interest in your country but you can still gain education where God will lead you.

In a nutshell, everybody wants to become successful in life. For few, higher education becomes an obstacle, just a dream and for others, it becomes a step in the ladder to their dream. I would like to sum up with these self-composed beads of words:

“Higher education is required to become something,

These lines, the society always sings,

But I have a secret to share...

About you, not many people will care,

So, if you can’t pursue this fruit,

Becoming a good person can be the best route.”
